2022 Community Excellence Award Honorees
The Rev. Dr. B. Herbert Martin, Sr., is the immediate past president of the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago. Born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, he is a graduate of Philander Smith College and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary. Martin has more than five decades of ministry work including serving as Pastor of Progressive Community Church in Chicago as well as providing pastoral care and support to former Chicago Mayor Harold Washington. Martin has held dozens of civic roles including Chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority, Executive Director of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and Executive Secretary and President of the NAACP - Southside Branch.

Sandra Lewis is a community-based and faith-based organizer with over 28 years of experience in community engagement. She served in the Office of the Cook County State's Attorney, Mayor Richard M. Daley, and most recently Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle where she worked with religious leaders across the City of Chicago and Cook County. Most recently, she focused on topics pertaining to sustainable development during the pandemic along with providing the most viable information regarding mass vaccination sites, and partnering with Cook County Health with messaging information to their congregants. Sandra officially retired from government on July 1, 2022.

John J. Farmer is Director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics and of the Miller Center for Community Protection and Resilience at Rutgers University. Mr. Farmer will address the crisis of mistrust and the challenges it poses to our democratic society.
