In 1984, provoked by racial tensions in the city, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin invited a small group of local religious leaders to share ideas about the crucial questions facing the metropolitan area. Together they discussed how to bring the moral voice of the interreligious community to bear upon the challenges and opportunities of the city. Thus began the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago.
Today, CRLMC is comprised of the head religious leadership of practically every major religious tradition in the greater Chicago area. For four decades, CRLMC has spoken with a unified moral voice on issues of public concern. It has promoted interfaith understanding and respect and supported local faith communities. And CRLMC has conducts activities and cooperated in other initiatives to serve the greater community. On September 27, CRLMC will celebrate its 40th anniversary with highlights from its history, current activities, and future plans. |
